Whitby's historic swing bridge will be closed again this weekend to help improve safety and support the town's economy, but not everyone is happy.
The trial closures were formally introduced in April 2021 after congestion during summer weekends and special events in previous years sparked safety concerns.
Councillor Neil Swannick says that the bridge closures should keep more people safe.
The current swing bridge, which spans 75ft, was built in 1908. It links the upper and lower harbour areas and the east and west sides of the town.
Whitby Swing Bridge will be closed to traffic between 10.30am and 4pm on the following date
- May 6 to May 8 (Bank Holiday weekend).
- May 27 to May 29 (Bank Holiday weekend).
However not everyone is happy with the arrangements. While welcoming the closure for the safety of pedestrians, Town councillor Linda Wilde says it is having a negative impact on some local residents.
Councillor Neil Swannick says he has hopes that the new work starting on the connecting road will help reduce the congestion.
The bridge will then be closed on all weekends during the school summer holidays. More dates will be announced for later in the year and will be added to the new North Yorkshire Council’s website.
