North Yorkshire Police remind people to stay local this weekend after this weeks slight easing of restrictions.
The lockdown rules changed on Monday to allow us to meet one other person in outside public places to socialise and not just exercise.
Superintendent Mike Walker fro North Yorkshire Police says its important this weekend that people stick to the rule and don't meet up in larger groups.
Superintendent Walker says it's also important that people taking advantage of the ability to meet up with one other person in an outdoor public place do so close to where they live and don't travel large distances,
Last weekend saw officers issue 133 COVID fines to people visiting North Yorkshire, including in Whitby where four people from Newcastle were issued a Fixed Penalty Notice after visiting the town to look at the Abbey and two people travelling from Edinburgh to Cambridge who took a detour to see Whitby Abbey.
Inspector Walker says officers will continue to enforce the regulations this weekend.
“Around two thirds of the tickets written over the past week have been to visitors to the region, who have left their homes with out a reasonable excuse and decided to make an unnecessary journey into North Yorkshire.
“As I said last week – we’re on the right path out of lockdown – but we’re not there yet. People are still contracting the virus and our hospitals are still caring for many people who are very ill, so we cannot afford to be complacent.
“I would ask the public to carry on adhering to the rules and continue to stay at home and only leave for necessary reasons, so we can pass the next milestone on the Government’s roadmap. Let’s keep going.”
