New help points that connect passengers to a call centre could be installed at Scarborough Station if plans are approved.
TransPennine Express has applied for permission to install three new ‘help points’ and replace two existing points at Scarborough Station to “enhance the information” available to people at the station.
The proposed points would use state-of-the-art equipment and are designed to comply with legal accessibility provisions and to improve convenience for customers.
Passengers using the proposed help points would be connected directly to call centres with two ‘call buttons’.
One would connect to an operator able to provide train running information, and the other is intended for use in an emergency to summon assistance.
TPE said that “the replacement help points proposed are of a contemporary design but will not have an increased impact on the heritage of Scarborough Railway Station visually”.
It added that “additional benefits include lower operational and maintenance costs”.
“Where new fixings are required and the existing fabric of the building has already been penetrated, damage to masonry will be first made good to a high standard by a qualified mason before the installation of new equipment commences,” submitted plans state.
The train company said that new holes will then be made to “accommodate revised fixings in the face of the blockwork, avoiding damage to the edges of the blocks themselves and disturbing the mortar”.
The application, submitted to North Yorkshire Council, states: “The purpose of the project is to enhance information available to customers in order to increase the sense of reassurance and security of travelling by train.
“The help points subject to the accompanying listed building consent application will follow the principle of inclusive design, ensuring that all passengers, including those with disabilities or other access needs, are able to use them independently, safely, and with dignity.”
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the proposal.
