It's important for Scarborough to have a full-sized town square because the retail sector is dead. That's the view of the United Scarborough Residents Group.
They're holding a public meeting at the town's YMCA theatre tonight.
The group say all are welcome to air their views and voice their opinions on what they call a controversial site that has been deteriorating for over 25 years on the main retail high street of the town.
One of the group's committee members is Cheryl Mann:
" So one meeting is a resident participation meeting with all our elected representative and new neighbourhood board to discuss the opportunity we have for a SC full size town square. People will be given the chance to view their opinions, whether they agree with a term square or not. We want the feedback.
"We need people there to attend to show the council this is what we want. We've just had some new CGI images that will be unveiled at the meeting."
Cheryl outlined what she'd like to see the site used for:
"A variety of outdoor specialist markets, pop-up vendors, exhibitions, live art performances, ice shrink community events. We could hold loads. We could have a community hub which would draw both young and old to a cafe culture style area to socialize and spend. It's important for to have a full size town square.
"Because the retail sector is fed a town square for Scarborough would offer a refashioned reinvented town centre. We focus on local entertainment and outdoor wellbeing to bring the footfall back into town, plus supporting the remaining retail unit."
The meeting is at Scarborough's YMCA theatre at 7pm.
