The Yorkshire Coast is grappling with a series of flood alerts today, Monday 1 December 2025, as a combination of high tides, strong winds, and rising river levels threatens disruption.
Local authorities are urging caution as they closely monitor dynamic conditions throughout the day.
Coastal areas have been prioritised due to immediate threats posed by the sea. An official flood alert covering the North Sea coast at Bridlington warns that flooding is "possible" due to high tides. Strong winds are expected to intensify the situation, leading to large waves and overtopping spray.
This specific coastal threat in Bridlington is anticipated to peak between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM today. The locations deemed most vulnerable are coastal roads and footpaths. The alert area for this sea-related risk stretches from Bridlington.
Further down the coast in North Holderness, communities including Hornsea are under a separate flood alert. In this area, the risk stems from rising river levels that may lead to flooding of low-lying land and roads near rivers. This alert, updated shortly after 10:00 AM, confirms flooding is possible today, 1 December 2025.
The village of Leven is currently subject to a Flood Warning, indicating that flooding is expected and residents should "act now". This is a more severe classification than the "Flood Alert" status issued for some other nearby coastal areas. The locations most affected are Leven village itself, as well as the South Field community. The flood warning area specifically covers the Holderness Drain and Leven Drain in Leven village. Authorities are aware of the situation and have pumps in operation.
Inland river systems that feed the coastal region are also under scrutiny. The Upper River Derwent catchment, which includes areas around Scarborough, has been issued a flood alert due to high river levels. This flooding is deemed "possible today". Authorities stated they are actively monitoring rainfall and river levels in this area.
The Environment Agency are warning that the public must “take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water”.
