87 year-old Brenda Blainey was killed at her home in early 2022
34 year-old Shahin Darvish-Narenjbon of The Grove, Thornton-le-Dale, has today (1 February 2023) received a mental health restriction order and hospital order at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility for killing 87 year-old Brenda Blainey at her home in early 2022.
Around 11.50am on 5 January 2022, Darvish-Narenjbon made a 999 call in which he claimed he had heard a loud bang and come downstairs to find Brenda on the floor of the kitchen. He reported that he had seen cars leaving the property shortly after hearing the bang but with all the doors locked, could not explain how anyone could have got into the house.
When officers arrived they immediately commenced CPR but very sadly Brenda’s injuries were too severe and she could not be resuscitated.
Darvish-Narenjbon, who was living with Brenda at the time of her death, and often referred to himself as her grandson, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was later charged with manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.
North Yorkshire Police Acting Detective Superintendent, Graeme Wright, commented on the case:
“This is an incredibly tragic incident in which Brenda lost her life after showing immense kindness to a young man who she identified was in need of support.
“Brenda was well-known in the local community for her compassion in helping people and had taken Darvish-Narenjbon into her home, giving him a place to live and treating him as a member of her family.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with Brenda’s family and I hope that the conclusion of this case today can give them some closure.”
