Humberside Police have launched a new initiative designed to support people who may experience difficulties communicating during contact with the police
New free to get cards will be available to anyone in the force’s jurisdiction.
Anyone who signs up will receive a Pegasus card and a unique PIN. Registration involves providing a few basic details, which are held securely and only accessed when needed.
When contacting the police, card holders can say “Pegasus” and give their PIN, allowing call handlers to access relevant information that helps guide the response. The card can also be shown in person to police officers.
Whether due to neurodivergence, disability, anxiety, or other factors, the scheme aims to offer a simple and secure way for people to share key information that helps responders tailor their approach and provide the most appropriate support. The Pegasus Scheme has been operational in various other parts of the country for some time.
Chief Superintendent Tracy Bradley, Force Control Room Commander, said:
“This is a really important step forward in how we support people with communication needs. We know that for some individuals, making a phone call or speaking to someone in uniform can be incredibly daunting especially in moments of stress or crisis.
“Pegasus gives us a way to understand those needs from the outset and respond in a way that’s respectful and more effective. It’s not just about improving communication it’s also about making sure people feel safe and heard. For our call handlers, having that information available at the right time can make all the difference.”
A spokesperson for the Force Disability Support Group said:
‘’Members of the Force Disability Support Group have led the groundwork to prepare Pegasus for launch, the group have been working extensively behind the scenes to get Pegasus ready, making sure it fits the needs of both our communities and our frontline teams. This scheme has the potential to remove barriers for people who might otherwise struggle to communicate with us, especially in moments of stress.
“By understanding those needs in advance, we can tailor our response and offer reassurance from the very first interaction. It’s a simple idea, but one that could make a real difference and we’re proud to be bringing it to our region.’’
