Historic Lifeboat Welcomed into Whitby Harbour

Whitby RNLI escorted the restored 1962 Watson class lifeboat, Voyage by Amity, into Whitby Harbour on Friday.

The event on Friday evening marked a nostalgic return for the vessel, which has been restored and will now be operating out of the iconic harbour.

Accompanying "Voyage by Amity" was the historic rowing lifeboat, the William Riley, adding to the day's celebratory atmosphere. The presence of these classic vessels served as a reminder of the RNLI's long-standing commitment to saving lives at sea.

In conjunction with the lifeboat's arrival, RNLI volunteers engaged in a watchkeeping exercise and received mechanic training, showcasing their dedication to maintaining high standards in maritime safety and rescue operations.

Richard Dowson, the station mechanic, said,

"It was lovely to escort the old lifeboat into Whitby harbour and celebrate the RNLI's history."

He highlighted the importance of public support in the evolution of lifeboat services, remarking,

"It is thanks to the support of the public that the lifeboats have evolved over the years, meaning we now have the most up-to-date equipment available for search and rescue.

We wish the crew the best of luck with their new venture in Whitby."
