Officials say a project to tackle crime in Bridlington is having an impact and will continue.
That's the message from East Riding Council who are a partner in the multi-agency "Clear, Hold Build" programme.
In an update to East Riding Councillors, Cabinet member for Public Protection - Councillor Leo Hammond - said the first phase has gone well.
The project launched in October with an aim of "relentlessly pursuing organised crime members using all available powers and tactics to clear Bridlington" and then continue activity to hold the location, so other gangs can’t take control in the vacuum; and work with residents and partners to make the community a safer place to live, work and visit whilst making it one less susceptible to being exploited by organised crime groups.
Arrests and a number of property closures in Bridlington over the last few months are being as signs that the multi-agency project is having an impact.
Councillor Leo Hammond says there are a number of benefits to the joined up approach.
The long term aims for the project are to roll out a variety of regeneration projects including recreational environments, as well as providing opportunities and support with employment funding, security, funding, and crime prevention.
Speaking at the launch event in October Community Policing Inspector Andy Beadman said:
“Whilst positive progress has already been made, I’m positive the collaborative work we, alongside our partners and the community will contribute to make the Bridlington area a vibrant place to live, work and enjoy.
“Tackling organised crime within the Humberside force remains a priority for us as it has a big impact on local communities, anti-social and disruptive behaviour often follows drug use and dealing.
“The community impact this type of offending is the reason we will continue to do everything we can to disrupt these criminal networks, removing them, and the drugs they supply and distribute, from our streets.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison said:
“Clear, Hold, Build is a proven strategy to tackle organised crime, to build community resilience and improve confidence and trust in the police. It works.
“In other areas where Clear, Hold, Build has been implemented, there has been a positive impact with drug offences, anti-social behaviour and burglaries reducing significantly. I look forward to some positive results from this initiative in Bridlington.”
