Bin Changes For Scarborough, Filey and Whitby Today

Changes are being made the rubbish and recycling collection days for 13,000 of the Borough’s homes

The Borough's waste and recycling team empty nearly 3 million bins each year and with new housing developments being constructed over the last few years the size of the collection rounds has become imbalanced with ;some crews are working far longer hours than others.

The Council say they now need to redistribute some of the work by changing some collection days in order to operate efficiently for all residents.

All homes which will see a change should already have been notified with a personalised calendar and information about how the changes will affect them. The Council say that these letters should have arrived in late October/early November and if you do not receive a letter then your collections haven’t changed.

Some short term disruption is expected during the first few weeks of the change in routine and an additional collection team will be operating over the next fortnight to help clear any missed collections.

Once the changes have been implemented the new collection frequencies will be the same as before.

As the changes are implemented some people will have to wait longer between collections. The advice from the council is...

Recycling

You may temporarily have a longer gap between your blue bin/sack collections, If you have to wait 3 or more days please put your recycling out in a cardboard box – don’t use black sacks for recycling.

If you have to wait longer between your blue bin/sack collections, then we will deliver a supply of blue sacks for you to use in addition to your blue bin. These should arrive by early November.

General Waste

You may temporarily have a longer gap between your green bin/sack collections. If this happens, we will collect a reasonable amount of excess non-recyclable rubbish. Place this out for collection in black sacks.

If you have to wait 7 or more days between your green bin/sack collections, then we will be operating an additional collection. If you are affected by this it will be shown on the letter you received.

The Council say they are working hard to deliver these changes with as little disruption as possible and are implementing them now, hopefully, in advance of the worst of the winter weather and the usual Christmas changes.

It's expected the changes will last in excess of five years before they need to be revisited.
