Coastal communities across North Yorkshire are celebrating a raft of successes in the Yorkshire in Bloom awards, with projects in Scarborough and Filey securing top honours.
The annual competition, organised by the regional body for the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign, saw judging take place in July 2025.
According to Yorkshire in Bloom, the campaign is not solely about floral displays and hanging baskets. The organisation states its aim is to encourage communities to make lasting improvements to their environment, which in turn fosters community spirit, civic pride, and responsibility for local areas. It asserts that participation can also boost local economies through tourism, stimulate voluntary work, and address environmental issues like sustainability and recycling.
In the 2025 results, Filey was awarded GOLD and named the category winner in the 'Coastal' section for its entry submitted by Filey in Bloom. The town saw further success, with the Filey Memorial Gardens achieving a PLATINUM award in the 'Parks, Gardens, Cemeteries and public building' category. Local businesses also contributed to the town's accolades, with The Egg and Spoon café winning a GOLD award in the 'Small business' category and Filey Bird Garden securing a GOLD in the 'Tourist attractions' section. Nearby, Hunmanby Station received a GOLD award in the 'Railway and transport hubs' category.
Scarborough also received significant recognition for its green spaces and community efforts. Three of the town's public sites were awarded the highest possible rating:
- South Cliff Gardens received a PLATINUM award.
- Peasholm Park was also awarded PLATINUM.
- Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery secured a GOLD award.
Furthermore, the community group 'Grow Scarborough' was recognised with a 'THRIVING' award in the RHS ‘It’s your neighbourhood’ category, which acknowledges voluntary community-led projects.
North Yorkshire Council noted that it worked with local groups and stakeholders to support entries from across the county. The judging criteria for the awards are split into three main priorities: Horticultural Achievement (40%), Environmental Responsibility (30%), and Community Participation (30%). The council provides services across several North Yorkshire towns, including Scarborough and Whitby.
Yorkshire in Bloom is a voluntary regional organisation that administers the RHS Britain in Bloom Campaign across the whole of Yorkshire. The organisation describes RHS Britain in Bloom as the largest horticultural campaign in Europe, involving numerous people and groups in creating lasting environmental improvements.
