Reports of a missing swimmer at Thornwick Bay prompted a major search operation last night.
On Wednesday evening, July 30, Flamborough RNLI launched a significant search operation at 9:33 PM after reports emerged of a swimmer missing at Thornwick Bay. The operation involved multiple lifeboats and aerial support, demonstrating the collaborative efforts of local rescue services.
The search was a coordinated effort, with the Flamborough, Bridlington, and Scarborough RNLI lifeboats participating alongside the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter. A fixed-wing aircraft later joined the operation, expanding the search capabilities over the challenging terrain.
The search area covered a vast expanse, including Flamborough Head, North Landing, and Thornwick Bay. Despite the dedication of the volunteer crews, the search faced difficulties due to rough sea swells at Silex Bay and reduced visibility conditions.
At 12:15 AM, the lifeboat crew returned to the South Landing station for refuelling and a crew change before resuming the search. However, after several hours of searching without any leads, the operation was ultimately suspended at 4:05 AM.
Flamborough RNLI confirmed that no trace of the missing swimmer was found.
The lifeboat returned safely to the station at 4:12 AM, where the crew and shore personnel promptly cleaned and refuelled the lifeboat and launching tractor in preparation for any future emergency calls.
The incident highlights the critical role of the RNLI and other emergency services in ensuring safety along the Yorkshire Coast, particularly during the busy summer months. The community remains hopeful for the safe return of the missing individual.
