A farm-based distillery on the Yorkshire Coast has marked a significant milestone by launching its first single malt whisky available through a national supermarket.
Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, located near Hunmanby, has partnered exclusively with Waitrose for the release of its new whisky, Filey Bay Nurture.
This launch represents the first time the Hunmanby farm-based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery has worked with a national supermarket. The new whisky, Filey Bay Nurture, is described as ‘soft, fruity and down to earth’ and is the inaugural release in the distillery's ‘Regenerative Editions' series. It is a marriage of ex-bourbon and ex-red wine casks.
The core focus of Filey Bay Nurture is to spotlight the distillery's regenerative farming practices and its farming heritage. Tom Mellor, co-founder of Spirit of Yorkshire and a third-generation farmer, emphasised the importance of balance in farming. "If we take out more than we put back in, future generations will pay the price," he stated. Mellor added that the Filey Bay Regenerative Editions are designed to "tell the story of why we farm the way we do and shine a light on our dedication to sustainable agriculture". Filey Bay Nurture specifically "focuses on the soil," with the distillery passionate about "nurturing the health of our soil through biodiversity, protecting our climate and water resources, minimising soil disturbance, and maintaining the land for future generations".
The whisky is described as "truly, traceable, from field to bottle with 100% homegrown barley and farm-sourced water". Mellor believes Filey Bay Nurture is "a delicious reflection of the rich, healthy land that nurtured the barley it was made from". He expressed delight in working with Waitrose, noting the partnership celebrates both the distillery's farming methods and farming itself.
Waitrose spirits buyer John Vine commented on the collaboration, stating that Waitrose is committed to respecting nature, animals, and producers through initiatives like their "Farming for Nature initiative," which supports farmers in adopting nature-friendly practices. Vine sees Filey Bay Nurture and the Spirit of Yorkshire's approach as a perfect fit for Waitrose's "drive towards regenerative farming and our desire to offer our customers sustainable food and drink that has been produced with nature in mind".
Spirit of Yorkshire is highlighted as one of only a few distilleries globally that use 100% homegrown, regeneratively farmed barley to produce its single malt whisky. Filey Bay Nurture will be available at selected Waitrose stores throughout the UK, Jersey, and Guernsey.
