The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for the Yorkshire Coast, effective from Saturday 7th December 2024,
Storm Darragh is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds, potentially causing disruption and damage.
The rain warning, in effect from 6:00 am to 11:59 pm on Saturday, predicts widespread rainfall of 15-20mm, with 30-50mm expected over higher ground like the North York Moors. This heavy rain could lead to:
- Flooding on roads, increasing journey times.
- Disruptions and delays to bus and train services.
- Flooding of homes and businesses.
A second warning for strong winds covers the same area from 6:00 am on Saturday to 6:00 am on Sunday. Northerly winds are predicted to gust to 65-70 mph, particularly as Storm Darragh moves away on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. These strong winds could:
- Damage buildings, including potential for tiles to be blown from roofs.
- Cause injuries or even be life-threatening due to flying debris.
- Lead to power outages, potentially impacting mobile phone coverage and other services.
- Cause injuries or be life-threatening due to large waves and debris being thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads, and properties.
- Force the closure of roads and bridges.
- Disrupt road, rail, air, and ferry services, causing delays and cancellations.
The Met Office advises residents to prepare for the storm by:
- Securing loose outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, and trampolines.
- Checking road conditions and public transport timetables before travelling and considering amending travel plans.
- Preparing for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs, and other essentials.
- If on the coast, staying aware of large waves and keeping a safe distance.
- Checking if their property is at risk of flooding and preparing a flood plan and emergency kit.
- Staying updated with the latest weather forecasts, as warnings can change quickly.
North Yorkshire Council has taken the decision to call off the local markets planned for tomorrow including the Whitby Saturday market.
The warnings come as a rare Red warning has been issued for parts of Wales where winds are expected to gust to 90mph and the Met office say that damaging winds associated with Storm Darragh are expected to cause significant disruption.
