James Farrar, the Chief Executive of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, has expressed his confidence that the devolution process will bring increased power and investment to the north of England
James Farrar says that he believes that having the entire north covered by mayors with significant connections to central government and the ability to speak with a unified voice presents a "really big opportunity".
According to Mr. Farrar, the current level of engagement with central government is unprecedented and must be capitalised on. He says that the ability to speak as York and North Yorkshire, and also as the broader north, is crucial when advocating for greater investment and collaboration moving forward.
Mr Farrar also highlighted the unique position of York and North Yorkshire in the devolution landscape. He described the region as a "rural trailblazer," being the first area outside the core cities to implement devolution.
While Mr Farrar is optimistic about the overall benefits, he also noted that "all areas won't benefit at the same time and all areas won't benefit in the same way".
