The Yorkshire Coast could experience scattered thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon into the evening and night, according to a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office.
The warning, which comes into effect at 3:00 PM tomorrow (Saturday, June 21st) and lasts until 4:00 AM on Sunday, June 22nd, advises residents to be prepared for potential impacts.
While many areas may remain dry, the Met Office warns that intense thunderstorms could bring "frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds, along with some heavy downpours for a time." This could lead to surface water impacts across the region.
They say the public should be aware of several potential disruptions:
- Driving Conditions: Spray and sudden flooding on roads could lead to difficult driving conditions and possible road closures.
- Community Isolation: There is a small chance that some communities could become cut off due to flooded roads.
- Power Cuts: A slight chance of power cuts affecting homes and businesses exists, with the potential loss of other services.
- Property Damage: There is a small chance of rapid flooding to homes and businesses, with damage possible from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
- Travel Delays: Where lightning strikes occur, delays and cancellations to train and bus services are possible.
In light of the warning, the Met Office has provided advice for residents on how to prepare and stay safe:
- Flood Preparedness: Residents in areas at risk of flash flooding should consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
- Securing Property: Before gusty winds arrive, ensure all movable objects and temporary structures, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences, are well secured to prevent injury or damage.
- Travel Planning: To avoid delays, individuals planning to drive should check road conditions, and those using public transport should consult bus and train timetables, amending travel plans if necessary.
- Power Cut Readiness: The Met Office advises preparing for potential power cuts by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.
- Thunderstorm Safety Outdoors: If caught outside during a thunderstorm and thunder is heard, seek safe, enclosed shelter, such as a car. Avoid sheltering under or near trees or other structures that could be struck by lightning. If on elevated ground, move to lower ground.
- Stay Informed: The Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest weather forecasts in your area as warnings can change quickly.
