North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service is working with a team of academics to come up with a new culture strategy for the organisation.
The work comes year after a report from inspectors found bullying, harassment and discrimination remained issues in all of England 44 fire and rescue services.
Director of service improvement - Damian Henderson -says the review will take a year to complete.
Damien Henderson says other work streams looking at making cultural changes will continue while the year long project takes place.
Academics from the Huddersfield University have been bought in to carry out the review which Deputy Chief Fire Officer - Matt Walker - says will make a positive difference to the organisation.
In March 2023 His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) published a report into the values and culture of all 44 fire and rescue services in England, and drew on evidence collected during inspections since 2018.
The report found that bullying, harassment and discrimination are, to varying degrees, still problems in all services. It made 35 recommendations, including:
- appropriate background checks on all firefighters and staff
- the introduction of new misconduct standards including a national list of barred personnel
- better systems to help staff raise concerns
