The owner of the Woodsmith Potash mine near Whitby has reaffirmed it's commitment to to employing local workers.
The multimillion pound Potash Mine near Whitby is owned by mining giant Anglo American and the company has a long standing commitment to employ local people at the site.
Matt Parsons from Anglo American provided an update on the employment situation to Whitby Town Councillors this week.
Matt said there will be further opportunities at the site and outlined the measures they are taking to ensure those jobs are visible to local people.
The company has previously committed to
"making jobs available for local people and companies in North Yorkshire and Teesside and providing skills training, both during the construction phases of the project and in long term operations."
The project also aims to train 50 apprentices in the first five years following the commencement of construction and says it will maintain an ongoing apprenticeship programme. The first 15 apprentices started in September 2019.
"train at least 300 local people in preparation for mining operations and run an undergraduate programme. We have also provided funding of £85,000 to the borough councils of Scarborough and Redcar and Cleveland to prepare local people for employment.
We try to use local suppliers and businesses wherever possible, and work with Local Enterprise Partnerships, councils and business networks to promote opportunities with the project."
