Whitby's Cemetery Concerns Continue

Concerns are mounting that Whitby could run out cemetery space in the next three years.

A Borough Council committee yesterday backed proposals to look at creating a new site on Larpool Lane in the town.

Eight sites have been looked at around Whitby - none were deemed to be ideal.

Councillor Jane Mortimer agrees that the location isn't perfect but says a solution needs to be pushed forwards.

Committee Chair - Councillor David Jeffels - says with the current cemetery expected to be full in three years, time is running out.

A number of sites have been looked at for potential cemetery sites in Whitby, but all have been found to be impractical or unavailable.

The Borough Council's Head of Environment Services, Jonathan Bramley, summarised the situation with the sites.

Although the Borough Council's Lives and Homes Committee has backed the Larpool Lane site, the final decision about where to build new cemeteries will be taken by the new unitary council which takes on the Borough Council's roles in April.

Jonathan says steps have been taken to ensure the new authority is aware of the urgency and issues.

Yesterdays meeting also voted to back new cemetery sites in Filey and Scarborough, bot of which are essentially extensions to the existing facilities. The borough council says that a public consultation into the proposals showed there was backing for the Filey and Scarborough projects, the council report states:

"It is clear from the public consultation on future cemeteries provision that the proposed sites for Filey and Scarborough have widespread support from members and the public. Our consultants are of the view that these sites are unlikely to meet with any significant issues should planning applications be submitted to develop them for cemetery use. "
