Whitby Town Edged Out By National Leaguers

A gutsy Whitby side were beaten narrowly by opponents two divisions higher on Saturday.

Hartlepool eventually edged out their hosts 2-0 from two divisions below in this close encounter.

The early stages saw James Harrison nod wide from Jarrett Rivers' cross, for Whitby, then Danny Johnson almost broke the deadlock for Pools only for Shane Bland to pull off a superb double save.

Bland stepped in to block soon after at his near post against from Johnson who's back playing in the North East after spells at Walsall and Leyton Orient in recent seasons.

Bland and Connor Smith combined to clear Jermaine Francis' mazy run and shot off the Whitby line after Town skipper and ex-Pools midfielder Lewis Hawkins fired wide at the other end.

Hartlepool's trialist keeper saved from another former United player in forward Matty Tymon. An attacking trialist forced in for Pools on 74 minutes. Tom Parkes then ensured victory for the National League side with the decisive second eight minutes from time.

Attendance: 577

Despite the result, Blues boss Gary Liddle told Whitby Town TV he was pleased:

Town are away at Guisborough Town, now managed by ex-Whitby chief Nathan Haslam, on Saturday.
