The Blues were indebted to hat-trick Stephen Walker as they won 4-3 in Nottinghamshire, on Saturday.
Walker nodded Town ahead inside three minutes and when his sublime chip doubled Town's advantage inside 5 minutes, it looked like it might be a comfortable afternoon for the Blues.
But hosts Basford United hit back on 37 minutes and levelled right at the end of the first half, from the penalty spot.
Walker saw his effort blocked, eight minutes into the second half, but Nathan Thomas, who set up Walker's opener, was on hand to slot in the loose ball for 3-2 Whitby.
However, Basford again netted with a free-kick for 3-3.
Whitby weren't to be denied though as Walker finished brilliantly again for 4-3.
