Works get underway today and are expected to run until Friday.
Whitby's Swing bridge is closed to traffic this week.
North Yorkshire Council is carrying out essential hydraulic works on the bridge.
Local Councillor - Neil Swannick - says the bridge will still be able to be used by pedestrians.
While the bridge will be open for pedestrian use it will be closed to vehicles and unable to open for shipping.
Councillor Swannick says that's why work to dredge the upper harbour has been intensified over the last few weeks
The Closure Notice is in place for a period of up to 25 days between 4th March 2024 and 28th March 2024 but the council say they hope that the work will be completed over the next five days.
