The highly anticipated Whitby Regatta begins today with a packed schedule of displays, activities, live music and aerial fly overs.
The event was first held more than 180 years ago and is set to bring thousands of people to the town.
The Whitby Regatta is thought to be one of the oldest sea Regatta on the Northeast coast.
Ivor Greer, Whitby Regatta Chairman, says that the event has a huge impact on the local area.
Here's what you can expect from the opening day of the event:
- Regatta Tombola - Near the Bandstand from 9:00am
- Pick a Pen - Captain Cook Area, from 11:00am
- Vintage Japanese Motor Cycle Club Rally - Spa Green, from 11:00am
- Rally Car Display - Spa Green, from 11:00am
- Robinson Cup (Sailing) - Whitby Bay, viewing from West Cliff, 1:30pm
- Regatta Sail Past & Lifeboat Launch - Harbour, 5:15pm.
There will also be a RAF Battle of Britain Lancaster display which is set to fly over at 1:52pm.
The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country, to promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations.
The flight operates six Spitfires, two Hurricane Mk 2Cs, a Lancaster as well as C47 Dakota and two Chipmunk aircraft (primarily used for training).
Ivor Greer says that the people behind the Regatta give up their own time to make sure the event is a success.
