A parish poll in Whitby says 'no' to living with Scarborough and 'yes' to putting restrictions on new homes, but turn out is low.
88 percent of Whitby residents who took part in a town poll last night think the town should not be in the same committee area as Scarborough when the new unitary council comes into force next April.
93 percent of those who voted also want new homes in Whitby to have a restriction placed on them so that they cant be used as holiday homes.
Two questions were posed to the electorate of Whitby in yesterday's parish poll, the first was:
"Should all new build and additional housing in Whitby parish be restricted to full time local occupation as a primary residence only and forever (in perpetuity)?"
2,111 voters answered yes to this question with 157 saying no.
The second question was:
"Do you want to stay in the same area committee as Scarborough in the new North Yorkshire unitary council?"
253 voters said yes while 1,982 said no.
Voting in the poll took place over a 5 hour period last night, The outcome of the poll is not binding on any organisation and is seen as an expression of the views of the electorate of the parish who have voted.
The turn out was just 22.72%
