Firefighters were called to a bin on fire by the harbour side, on Battery Parade, Whitby.
The incident happened just after midnight, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A crew from Whitby responded to reports of a bin on fire.
This was caused by a dropped cigarette.
Officers used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
