The opening of the town's real ice rink was due to take place tonight but has been hit by the weather.
Whitby Winter Festival organisers had said yesterday that the say the town's ice rink would open as planned on Friday, but the deteriorating forecast has lead them to delay the opening until Sunday.
The MET Office says storm Arwen will bring very strong winds to the Yorkshire Coast over the next 24 hours. An amber wind warning is in effect from 3pm today. Winds could gust to 75 miles per hour although 65 mph looks more likely locally.
Whitby Winter Festival say:
"We were very disappointed to hear that the Christmas Market has been cancelled this weekend due to the poor weather forecast. This is such a shame for the organisers, stall holders and everyone planning to visit.
Further to our earlier update, we have been in touch with the authorities and been advised to postpone the opening to ensure everyone remains safe. The ice rink will now open at 10AM SUNDAY 28 NOVEMBER Tickets sold for Friday and Saturday will be automatically refunded. A rescheduled display from the Billingham Skaters will take place at 6.45pm on Sunday. All welcome to come down to watch. Thank you for your continued support"
The organisers say refunds can take up to 14 days to process.
The Ice rink is located on Endeavour Wharf where construction has been taking place this week.
The Ice Rink is part of the overall Whitby Winter Festival which is being managed by Welcome To Whitby CIC, a volunteer organisation representing the hospitality businesses of Whitby.
The group is working in partnership with Yorkshire Coast Bid and Scarborough Borough Council with support from many other local businesses.
Welcome To Whitby say they aim to help the hospitality businesses of the town bounce back from COVID and to provide things that the local community can enjoy. It’s run by unpaid volunteers.
