As more reports emerged last week of dead shellfish washing up on north east beaches the opposition parties in North Yorkshire are calling for a public inquiry into the crustacean deaths.
Whitby Labour Councillor Neil Swannick is one of those calling for a full public inquiry into the shellfish deaths which started back in Autumn 2021.
Councillor Swannick says the motion will be tabled in the next few weeks.
Opposition groups on the incoming North Yorkshire Council will propose the Conservative-run authority helps avert any repeats of what has been described as “one of Britain’s biggest ecological marine disasters” since crabs, lobsters and other sea creatures, such as prawns, washed up on the county’s coastline from October 2021.
The notice of motion, to be tabled at the unitary authority’s first full meeting in May, follows the authority’s leader, Councillor Carl Les, pledging to address concerns raised over the availability of compensation for fishermen from Staithes to south of Filey.
The opposition parties are calling for a full public inquiry amid continuing claims that toxins from the Tees may have been to blame.
But, Scarborough and Whitby's MP has defended the work of scientists who concluded a novel pathogen was the most probable cause of a mass shellfish die off event.
An independent panel of experts reached that conclusion earlier this year.
Sir Robert Goodwill thinks the scientists got it right.
