The Met Office predicts that outbreaks of rain moving northeastward on Saturday and into Sunday will likely be preceded by snow on its northern flank. While the snow in southern and eastern England may be transient, significant accumulations are possible in parts of Wales, the Midlands, and northern England. The Yorkshire Coast could see 5 cm or more of snow accumulation, with the potential for higher amounts in the Pennines. Strong winds may cause drifting of lying snow.
As warmer air moves northward, the snow may transition to freezing rain, particularly in Wales, the Midlands, and northern England, increasing the risk of ice and creating hazardous conditions. A rapid thaw of lying snow is possible later on Sunday.
The Met Office warns of potential travel delays on roads, stranded vehicles and passengers, and delays or cancellations of rail and air travel. Power cuts and disruptions to mobile phone coverage are also possible. There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become isolated.
The Met Office advises residents to prepare for the wintry conditions by planning routes, checking for delays and road closures, and amending travel plans if necessary. Drivers should allow extra time to prepare their vehicles and pack essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger.
Pedestrians are advised to use pavements along main roads, which are more likely to be treated for ice. Cyclists should also stick to main roads. Residents are encouraged to gather torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items in case of power cuts or service disruptions.
