Amber weather warnings are in place close to the Yorkshire Coast.
As of 9am on Sunday, amber weather warnings were issued by the Met Office for much of the north of England, including some of the Esk Valley west of Whitby and parts of Ryedale.
The Met Office says to expect the following in amber regions:
A period of freezing rain and some snow will lead to some disruption.
- Injuries from slips and falls and danger to life on icy surfaces are possible
- Dangerous driving conditions may occur, leading to road traffic collisions, road closures and longer journey times; while pavements and cycle paths may become impassable
- Bus, train and air travel may be affected by delays and cancellations
- There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
The rest of our region is under a yellow warning for snow and ice on Sunday.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue say that on Saturday morning, at 7am, firefighters from Whitby responded to a report of a van that was in danger of hitting a building, on Upgang Lane, in the town, due to ice on the road.
Officers assisted the van off the frozen hill and gave the owner advice.
