Could waves be used to produce electricity to power some of the Yorkshire Coast's harbours?
A proposal to use wave power to produce renewable electricity for Scarborough and Whitby Harbours is to be given around £40k of feasibility funding.
The money is coming from a seven million pound government grant which has been given to net zero projects in North Yorkshire and York.
Councillor Greg White is North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for managing the Environment, he says the feasibility study will look at the practicalities of the scheme.
Councillor White says the wave power idea is just one of a number of net zero projects being looked at across North Yorkshire and York
A total of 23 schemes will receive a share of the York and North Yorkshire Net Zero Fund. Greg White says the fund has received a significant sum of government cash.
North Yorkshire Council’s leader, Cllr Carl Les, said:
“This is a significant step forward for projects which will be extremely important to help to achieve our aims of tackling the threat of climate change, while driving forward innovation and expertise in the green technology sector.
“This is a clear indication of the benefits that are already being realised ahead of the proposed devolution deal for York and North Yorkshire being introduced.
“These projects will provide more jobs and greater career opportunities, while developing what is such an important sector that will be recognised nationally and bring in more investment to York and North Yorkshire.”
