North Yorkshire Police have issued an urgent warning regarding reports of individuals going door-to-door soliciting the purchase of gold in Whitby.
Police say the activity appears to be particularly focused on areas with a significant elderly population.
The police have emphasised the importance of vigilance among residents, urging them to avoid discussing or disclosing any information about their precious belongings on their doorsteps. "Residents are advised to refrain from disclosing possession of, showing interest in, or discussing any details around precious belongings/metals," a spokesperson from the police stated.
Concerns have been raised about the motives behind these door-to-door buyers. The police caution that such activities could pose several risks, including potential scams, fraudulent intentions, or even the possibility of scouting for burglary targets. "There are questions around the motives of the door-to-door buyers, and as such we must be vigilant around the risks associated with door-to-door sales," the spokesperson added.
In response to these reports, the Whitby Neighbourhood Policing Team has initiated high visibility patrols in the area to reassure residents and deter any suspicious activity. Officers have been actively engaging with community members, providing crime prevention advice, and encouraging residents to remain alert.
The police have also called upon the community to support this initiative by checking in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. "Please join the Whitby Neighbourhood Policing Team in echoing this crime prevention alert," they urged, highlighting the importance of community solidarity in safeguarding against potential threats.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately, ensuring that the safety and security of the Whitby community remain a top priority.
