In the early hours of Friday morning, a resident in the Falsgrave area of Scarborough was alerted by her doorbell camera to motion in her rear garden.
North Yorkshire Police say they were contacted by the woman and quickly made an arrest.
Officers say:
"Upon reviewing the footage, she noticed a suspect attempting to access her shed. She then confronted the individual, who fled the scene.
Upon inspection, she found the shed door ajar. Thankfully, nothing was taken.
Officers quickly located a 13-year-old boy nearby, wearing clothing that matched the description from the CCTV footage.
The individual was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and remains in custody for questioning.
Another quick success by our coastal team."
The local policing team say the incident serves as a timely reminder to residents to secure their property and reduce the risk of becoming a target.
They suggest some simple but effective security measures:
- Always lock your doors and windows, even if you’re only stepping out for a short time.
- Double-lock doors and use secure locks on sheds, garages, and gates.
- Keep items like handbags, car keys, and documents out of sight. Avoid leaving them near letterboxes or cat flaps.
- If you’re out in the evening or all day, use timers to turn on lights or a radio to give the impression someone’s home.
- Ensure your burglar alarm is activated if you have one.
- Lock bicycles inside a shed or garage, securing them to a robust anchor.
"Taking these steps can help protect your property and give you peace of mind. Stay vigilant and don’t give burglars an easy target.
If you see anything suspicious, please report it online or via 101.If a crime is in action, or if it’s an emergency, always dial 999. "
