The driver of a Motability vehicle has been arrested in Scarborough after testing positive for drugs.
North Yorkshire Police launched their annual Summer drink and drug drive campaign at the start of the month, emphasising the importance of safe transportation choices during the summer season. As summer gatherings take place across the region, authorities are urging the public to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, highlighting the potential dangers associated with such decisions.
Today (Tuesday 22 July 2025) officers were on routine patrol in Scarborough when they noticed a blue MG that didn’t respond to a red light.
On stopping the registered Motability vehicle, the officers were concerned about how the driver presented. A roadside drugs test was carried out on the driver who tested positive for cannabis and cocaine.
The man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of drugs and currently remains in custody.
Traffic Constable Joe Schramm from North Yorkshire Police commented on the ongoing issue, stating,
“Despite the warnings from our latest campaign, we are still finding drivers who are putting themselves in danger and others by driving under the influence of drink and drugs. Driving under the influence is a choice, and there are always other options such as using a taxi or public transport. We will continue to be relentless in our approach to removing those offending drivers from North Yorkshire’s roads.”
As part of the campaign, the police have created a social media reel that has garnered over 200,000 views since its launch. The video features two young men, a demographic identified as being over-represented in drink drive casualties. The campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage individuals to think carefully about their transportation choices after consuming alcohol.
North Yorkshire Police say they remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users during the summer months, reinforcing that enjoyable gatherings should not lead to dangerous decisions behind the wheel.
