Study Reveals High Cost of Making Some Scarborough Homes Energy Efficient

The cost of retrofitting some older homes in Scarborough to be energy efficient could be as high as £56k per property.

That's according to the Borough Council, they've been involved in a study looking at the challenges of retrofitting Victorian homes and stone built rural properties.

Councillor Carl Maw says there are a number of challenges.

The council is now preparing an application for a share of government funding to financially support residents seeking to retrofit their properties to make them more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

North Yorkshire aims to be carbon-neutral by 2035 and carbon net negative by 2040, which will require private and public buildings to be made more energy efficient.

The importance of retrofitting and energy efficiency has been raised as an increasingly pressing issue amid rising energy costs and the climate crisis.

Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet member for the environment, Councillor Michelle Donhue-Moncrieff, thinks the problems of retrofitting older properties are often over simplified and feels the study provides a useful 'blueprint' of what the challenges are.

Council Leader Steve Siddons says the high costs of retrofitting some older properties is a real challenge for the borough, but one which needs to be overcome.

Grants to offset the costs of retrofitting have already been available this year to households on lower incomes and now the authority will be seeking further Government funding to increase the number of properties that are retrofitted.
