The Met Office has now issued an Amber Wind Warning for Friday with gusts up to 75mph possible.
Forecasters say there is potential for a spell of very windy weather across much of the UK during over the weekend.
They say the strongest winds will arrive across northern Scotland during Friday afternoon, before becoming more widespread overnight and into Saturday morning.
an Amber wind warnign has been issued for the Yorkshire Coast for Friday afternoon and evening.
Forecasters say:
"Storm Arwen will bring high northerly winds southwards across Scotland during Friday afternoon and evening, the highest winds then becoming confined to northeast England early Saturday. Gusts of 65 to 75 mph are expected in coastal areas with gusts in excess of 75 mph in a few places."
An Amber warning means there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather.
What to expect
- Flying debris is likely and could lead to Injuries or danger to life
- Probably damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
- Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected
- Some roads and bridges likely to close
- There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties
A yellow wind warning is in place for much of the UK for Saturday which may cause some travel disruption and damage.
The Met Office say:
"Gusts will widely reach 55 to 65 mph in many coastal areas on Saturday with the highest gusts in coastal parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, southwest England and northeast England where gusts in excess of 65 mph are expected in some areas. Winds will start to slowly ease over Scotland and then northern England during the course of the day."
They expect that winds will tend to slowly ease from the north during Saturday afternoon.
