An amber weather warning has been issued for the Yorkshire Coast as Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption on Friday.
The warning is in effect between 06:00 (UTC) and 21:00 (UTC) on Friday 24 January 2025. This update follows a previous yellow weather warning, with the severity of the storm now expected to be greater.
Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, before clearing to the northeast on Friday night. The region is expected to experience very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph inland, 70-80 mph in some areas, and 80-90 mph along exposed coasts and hills. There may be a slight reduction in wind strength as the center of the storm passes, particularly in parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, before winds rapidly increase again. Winds are expected to gradually ease later on Friday.
The Met Office has warned of significant potential impacts from the storm, including:
- Power cuts are likely, potentially affecting other services like mobile phone coverage.
- Travel disruptions are highly probable, impacting road, rail, air, and ferry services. Expect longer journey times and potential cancellations. Some roads and bridges may close.
- Damage to buildings is a risk, with roofs potentially being blown off and power lines brought down.
- Flying debris poses a danger, as well as large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal areas. This poses a risk of injury and danger to life.
Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property:
- Secure loose items outside your home such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.
- Plan your journeys carefully. Check bus and train timetables, and amend travel plans if necessary. If driving, check road conditions and make sure you have essentials in your car including warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, and a torch.
- Prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items.
- If you are on the coast, be aware of the dangers of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care when walking near cliffs, and keep dogs on a lead.
- Stay updated with the latest weather forecast and be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly.
