Storm Darragh brought high winds and heavy rain to the Yorkshire Coast over the weekend, keeping the fire service busy attending a range of incidents.
In Scarborough, crews responded to numerous calls related to wind damage. On Saturday evening, a crew inspected a property where the external skin of a side wall had blown off. They found the internal wall to be secure and contacted the housing association.
Later that night, a large tree fell against a house, but was deemed to be stable. The occupants were advised accordingly.
Sunday saw a flurry of activity as crews were called to secure or remove dangerous roofing elements and chimney stacks damaged by the high winds. One incident involved two chimney pots and loose masonry falling from a premises, requiring the use of an aerial ladder platform to make the area safe. Another call involved tiles falling from a premises, but due to the strong winds, crews were unable to secure them and had to cordon off the area.
Additionally, crews in Scarborough responded to reports of a shop sign and a tree hanging precariously over public footpaths, successfully removing the sign and assessing the tree. They also assisted ambulance crews with a difficult patient extrication.
In Pickering, a crew from Kirkbymoorside responded to a call about a garage roof blowing off on Saturday evening. They removed one corrugated metal sheet and secured another that had also come loose.
On Saturday evening, the Danby crew provided assistance to a motorist stranded after driving through flood water. The crew drove through the shallow water to retrieve the driver and take them to safety.
