Staycations could be big business for the Yorkshire Coast this summer, but there's a warning the speed at which we come out of lockdown will depend on data not dates, and we need to stick to lockdown rules in the meantime.
Staycations are expected to be big business for the Yorkshire Coast when the lockdown measures are lifted.
Self catering holiday accommodation is expected to reopen in mid April with hotels and B&B's in mid may.
North Yorkshire County Councils Chief exec Richard Flinton says there is a real opportunity for the area.
Richard Flinton is urging businesses in the sector to start preparing them selves for the reopening when it comes.
Richard Flinton cautions that the reopening dates are still to be confirmed at that the Prime Minister was clear that the final decisions will be based on data and not fixed dates. Richard says we all need to keep following the lockdown rules and COVID guidance.
"Although Covid infection rates are falling significantly in North Yorkshire, and are below the national and regional average, in nearly every district they are still three to four times higher than they were last September when Selby and Scarborough were put on the Government watch list.
Although we might be thinking about summer holidays and planning for when we can be together once again with friends and family and for social events beyond June, we must remember that the speed at which we come out of lockdown will depend on data not dates. It’s been a very long winter of restrictions, but we have to give it one last push and keep going. We must carry on, therefore, with all the social distancing and safety measures, wearing masks, washing hands, staying local and not mixing indoors to get the rate down as much as we can. "
