This years' McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k will be started by Scarborough Cancer Survivor - Liam Critchett.
Race organisers asked This is the Coast listeners to nominate local inspirational people for the role of race starter.
Liam, who was diagnosed with spinal cancer at the age of ten received multiple nominations from people impressed with his resilience and determination.
Liam says he's spent the last 16 years battling to get back on his feet
Liam says the last 16 years have been a challenging journey but he's been determined not to give up.
Over the last 16 years Liam says he has been through over 50 operations, chemotherapy 3 times a week, missing school and years of set back after set back. He says :
"It’s been one hell of a journey. I took a massive risk, and decided and sacrificed so much to commit to rehab, but I’m 100% certain I made the right decision! I’m getting so close to getting where I’d never thought would have been possible. "
Liam continues to undergo physio three times a week in Hull alongside working and fundraising to pay for the continuing treatment. Liam says he couldn't do it all with the people around him who have offered their support.
Liam was delighted to accept the invitation to start this years' McCain Yorkshire Coast 10K, a role performed last year by local Paralympic Gold Medallist Lawrence Whiteley. Liam recently completed a 5k walk on crutches.
The 10k event takes place on Sunday 16th October with 2,000 runners taking part in the main race from all over the country.
Liam will be starting the main race from the stage at 9:45am
The Fun runs will get underway from 11:30 and the race organisers say they will be revealing who will be starting those races in the next few days.
The 2.5km Fun Run starts at 11:30, the shorter 1.6km run starts at 11:50. There is free entry for under 15's, a medal for all finishers and a tree will be planted for each finisher as well.
