Bridlington Town continue their fine form in NPL East but left it late in Northumberland.
It was a day of pure drama at Croft Park as 10-man Bridlington Town defied the odds to secure a gritty 1-0 victory over Blyth Spartans.
The match exploded into life early on when a heavy challenge from Markham sent a Spartans player flying into the Seasiders’ dugout, sparking a heated scuffle that set the tone for a feisty afternoon.
The game turned on its head in the 28th minute following a moment of defensive heartbreak. The ball bounced awkwardly toward Joe Batty at right-back, just five yards into the Bridlington half; a heavy miskick saw the ball squirm away, allowing a lurking Spartans attacker to snatch possession and sprint toward goal.
In a desperate bid to halt the breakaway, Batty brought his man down, leaving the referee with no choice but to brandish a straight red card.
Manager Scott Kerr, booked for his protests, reacted immediately by bringing on Riley Cooper for Hamza Hamdosh in the 31st minute to stabilize the defense. Bridlington then rode their luck just before the break, surviving a miraculous sequence where Blyth struck the crossbar twice in seconds. The second half was a story of heroic defending.
The Seasiders cleared one off the line in the 58th minute as Spartans piled on the pressure, but the introduction of fresh legs proved to be the masterstroke. Stan Hewitt entered the fray for Ifeanyi Nnenanya in the 54th minute, followed by Eddie Kettlewell replacing Casey Stewart in the 63rd and Olly Green coming on for Ben Farrar in the 69th. After Kettlewell nearly broke the deadlock with a stinging double effort, it was Hewitt who provided the magic in the 85th minute. Picking the ball up in midfield, he drove relentlessly at the tired Blyth defense before drilling a low finish into the near post. The goal sparked incredible, jubilant celebrations as players, staff, and the traveling faithful erupted, knowing the sheer magnitude of the strike.
Bridlington dug in through four minutes of stoppage time to see out a massive victory built on nothing but heart and graft.
