'Sir Nigel Gresley' Returns To Grosmont After 7 Year Absence

The historic steam engine arrived today, ahead of this weekend's Steam Gala on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Train enthusiasts gathered at Grosmont Station to welcome the famous A4 Pacific which had made the long journey from Crewe.

It was due to arrive at 12:45 but was delayed by around an hour and twenty minutes.

The engine carried the plate 'Elizabethan' at the front, in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Paddy spoke to Luke Hudman, Marketing Manager at NYMR about its return:

Paddy also spoke to Richard Swales, Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust:

Sir Nigel Gresley was the 100th Gresley Pacific built by the Great Northern Railway / London and North Eastern Railway in 1937.

It was mainly based at London King's Cross, with a spell at Grantham during World War II.

On 3rd June 1956, Sir Nigel Gresley had the honour of hauling the Royal Train from King's Cross to York with H.M the Queen on board.

The "Stephenson Locomotive Society Special" of the 23rd May 1959 was the first train in the UK with a booked or advertised schedule of over 100 mph and during that trip, it set the official post-war speed record for steam traction of 112 mph.

Sir Nigel Gresley will take part in this weekend's Steam Gala before starring in the 'Back In Steam' event in October, when it will take passengers between Grosmont & Pickering pulling restored historic LNER Coach Association teak carriages.
