Scarborough's New Street Cleaning Machine Needs a Name

Forget Boaty McBoatFace, North Yorkshire Council are asking for your help naming their new street cleaning machine in Scarborough.

The state-of-the-art "Glutton" machine helps tackle problem areas more effectively as it sucks up litter from harder to reach locations.

Council cleansing operative - Stephen Stain - says it's made a big difference to what they can achieve.

"When we first got the glutton the town centre, it wasn't a mess, but there was things that if you're walking about with a bag and a picker, you don't pick up.

The glutton just literally gets rid of all that. It gets in all the corners, it gets rid of all the dust, it gets rid of all the cigarette ends, cans.

When we started using it, you were looking at probably six hours to get the whole of the town centre done. But you're looking at three hours now to do what was taken as six."

The introduction of the new machine is part of a wider programme of improvement work in Scarborough which the council says will "make the town an even better place for everyone".

The long-term initiative includes more than 30 projects that will deliver real, visible change. From eye-catching murals, new litter bins and street furniture to grants for shop front improvements.

The new state-of-the-art cleaning equipment has been bought in to "tackle problem areas more effectively".

Stephen says it is certainly doing that.

"When we started using it, you were looking at probably six hours to get the whole of the town centre done., but now we're on top of it and all the work is being done, other than what is dropped first thing in the morning and the night before, you're looking at three hours now to do what was taken as six.

So we are extending out from the town centre and getting some of the side streets done.

We do weeding because it's absolutely amazing at that, and we have an attachment for it that will take up the weeds.

And it's just a fantastic piece of kit, which has transformed Scarborough Town Centre."

North Yorkshire Council is now inviting residents to help choose a name for the new machine.

Local people can vote for their favourite name from a choice of eight suggest titles.

The choices are:

  • Lamborcleani
  • Optimus Grime
  • SCAR2-D2
  • Scrubby doo
  • Squeaky McGleam
  • The Dirtinator
  • Trash Gordon
  • Trashy McTrashface

Voting is open until Friday July 25th at https://online1.snapsurveys.com/Interview/4575fcbc-0626-46c0-8999-2986dad7a29f the winning name will be revealed later in the summer.
