Scarborough Town Council is recruiting for an assistant town clerk with a salary of up to £33,000, depending on qualifications.
“A rare and exciting opportunity to work at a newly established council” is being advertised by Scarborough Town Council (STC), which wants to recruit an assistant town clerk to support the work of the town clerk and the authority.
The permanent contract will be for 30 – 37 hours of work per week and the annual salary is £29,064 – £31,022 “for candidates developing in role” and £31,537 – £33,699 for experienced or CiLCA-qualified applicants.
The assistant town clerk will help “shape the foundations of a new local authority and play a role in building its future and will be central to developing our operational capacity, embedding good governance, and supporting the elected members, including the mayor.”
STC was officially formed on April 1 as part of North Yorkshire’s local government reorganisation and the authority held its first election in May.
According to the job notice, future areas of interest for the authority include “social media presence, building upon the civic and mayoral roles, fostering community engagement, and community grant administration”.
It adds that “these areas of interest will likely develop further once the council has agreed its strategic objectives.”
The assistant town clerk will be assigned two of the council’s four committees to serve the committee’s needs and help fulfil its ambitions.
The notice states: “At this preliminary stage, the assigned committees are likely to be the community and place committee and the harbour committee.”
Scarborough Town Council’s harbour committee is set to hold its second meeting of the year on Wednesday, November 5 and members of the public are invited to attend.
One of the agenda items for the harbour committee includes a “proposal to amend the frequency of harbour committee meetings from quarterly to an as-and-when-required basis”.
In July, Thomas Murray, the mayor of the Reform-led authority, said that “a main focus” was to set up a harbours committee to act as a “conduit between the harbour users and North Yorkshire Council”.
The job description for assistant town clerk adds:

The role of town clerk, which was recently filled, was advertised earlier this year with an annual salary between £54,071 and £58,064.
The deadline for applications to the role of assistant town clerk is Sunday, November 30, and interviews are expected to take place the week commencing December 8.
