Scarborough Spa say the Spa Cliff lift will reopen on Friday morning after a period of essential maintenance.
Borough Council engineers discovered an issue with the Spa Cliff lift during a routine inspection.
The council reported that work was needed to address issues with the concrete roof of the motor room and the steelwork that supports it. Both were showing signs of deterioration. The motor room sits beneath the top station which complicated the situation leading the council to ask specialist engineers to come up with a fix.
Scaffolding had been put in place earlier in the month to aid with the final stages of the repairs, that has now been removed and Scarborough Spa say the lift will be working for this weekends Jazz Festival.
The Spa say:
"The lift will be running this weekend for the start of the Scarborough Jazz Festival.
Jazz Festival Cliff Lift running times:
- Friday 23rd - 10.00 to 00.15
- Saturday 24th - 10.00 to 00.15
- Sunday 25th - 10.00 to 22.30
A full monthly timetable will follow."
In a social media post earlier in September, Councillor Rich Maw said:
"The motor room works are now completed and signed off.
Furthermore, the public may be interested to learn that there is a dearth of available contractors for this type of work; when we were exploring the motor room scheme contractors were advising it would be October before they could take on new work!
We were fortunate that we have a good relationship with the contractor that completed those works, in that he moved works around to accommodate our requirements.
This same contractor is working on the carriages."
