Scarborough's Harbour Executive is to write to the government asking them to re-examine the cause of the shellfish mortality event that affected the Yorkshire Coast earlier in the year.
Many local fishermen say there were no shellfish left to catch after the event, which a multi-agency report put down to an algal bloom. Local operators report catching just ten percent of their normal catch after a massive decline in shell fish numbers since last autumn.
But Scarborough Borough Council's portfolio holder for Harbours - Janet Jefferson - says data obtained by the Whitby Commercial Fishing association has suggested a chemical called Pyridine may have played a role.
