Scarborough Town Council is to form it’s own harbours committee.
The Town's Mayor, Thomas Murray, says it’s an important asset for Scarborough.
However, Scarborough Town Council has no direct control over the harbour which is overseen by North Yorkshire Council.
Mayor Murray provided the following statement:
"Scarborough Town Council recognises the fundamental importance of Scarborough Harbour to the town's economy, heritage and community. The harbour is a working asset that supports local employment, sustains marine and fishing industries, and forms a central part of the town's identity.
"Scarborough Town Council supports the continued use and development of the harbour in a way that respects its working character and meets the needs of its users. In particular, it believes that any redevelopment must be ambitious and future focused. It is noted that current redevelopment proposals make provision for the potential installation of a boat heist at a later stage.
"Scarborough Town Council supports the inclusion of a suitably sized boat hoist as essential infrastructure to future-proof the harbour, increase capacity, attract investment, and secure long-term opportunities for local marine industries and boat servicing alongside expanding technical education and increasing employment opportunities for its residents.
"The committee will include, however, is not limited to providing a formal platform for Harbour users and stakeholders to raise concerns and proposals, monitor maintenance and investment needs at the harbour. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure appropriate facilities and services are delivered in a timely manner.
"Advocate for funding opportunities that support Harbour development. Scarborough Town Council will continue to champion the needs of harbour users, support the delivery of meaningful infrastructure, and protect the Harbour's role as a working and economically significant part of the town."
There then followed a vote by the full council in which it was agreed to form the committee.
The mayor made no secret of his wish to form the harbours committee stating it was “a main focus”, and that he wanted it to act as a “conduit between the harbour users and North Yorkshire Council”.
