Scarborough Borough Council is reassuring residents that polling stations will be safe places to vote in the forthcoming election for the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner on Thursday 6 May.
One way systems, enhanced cleaning, social distancing and limited numbers in polling stations at any one time will ensure the venues are Covid-19 secure. Voters can keep themselves and others safe by:
- wearing a face covering (unless exempt)
- bringing their own pen or pencil to use
- sanitising their hands when entering and leaving the polling station
- keeping a safe distance from others when inside the polling station and when arriving at and leaving the polling station
Anyone who has Covid-19 symptoms or has tested positive for Covid-19 at the time of the election, and/or has been asked to self-isolate, must not attend a polling station. Those finding themselves in any of these situations do not need to miss out on voting. They will be able to apply for an emergency proxy vote – where someone they trust can vote on their behalf. An emergency proxy vote can be arranged by calling the council’s elections team on 01723 232309 before 5pm on polling day (6 May).
The council is also encouraging anyone unsure of where they should vote to check the location of their polling station by referring to the details on their poll card. Alternatively a list of polling stations is available to download from the polling stations section at scarborough.gov.uk/elections.
