Scarborough Borough COVID Spread Caused by People Flouting the Rules

88% of COVID fines issued by North Yorkshire Police last weekend were in the Scarborough Borough.

The spread of COVID in the Scarborough Borough is being driven by people flouting the current lock down rules.

That's the message from the local authorities who say while the vast majority of people are respecting the rules, those who aren't are largely responsible for the borough having one of the highest infection rates in England.

At the weekend North Yorkshire Police issued 45 COVID fines across the county, 40 of them were in the Scarborough Borough.

Superintendent Mike Walker says the fact that they've had to issue so many fines in the borough is disappointing.

North Yorkshire's director of public health Dr Lincoln Sergeant says visitors to the Yorkshire Coast are not the cause of the massive increase of COVID cases in the Scarborough Borough.

Dr Sergeant says most of the spread is down to the household interactions of people who live here.

Superintendent Walker says while the vast majority of people are following the rules, those who flout them are causing the spread of the disease

Dr Sergeant the data from across the county shows that most of the spread is not happening in schools or workplaces but is down to the interactions of local people in their homes.
