Scarborough Borough Council Looking at Shellfish Support

The council says the recent shellfish mortality event is having on impact on the local shellfish industry.

Scarborough borough council says it is looking at what support it can offer to the local shellfish industry after the recent decimation of the fish stock.

Local operators report catching just ten percent of their normal catch after a massive decline in shell fish numbers since the autumn.

Councillor Janet Jefferson is the cabinet member for Harbours and was asked about the situation at last Friday's full council meeting.

Councillor Jefferson was asked if there was any financial support that the borough council could provide, possibly in the form of reduced fees.

In her report to council Councillor Jefferson said:

"The recent shellfish mortality event which has affected the coastline between the River Tees and Cayton Bay, continues to impact on the livelihoods of our fishing communities and in turn, will affect the wider harbour communities and associated industries within the Borough.

Landings of shellfish product are severely limited at present and estimations from the Environment Agency have determined that whilst the initial event is now completed, the recovery stage will be prolonged."
