The Borough Council says the vast majority of people in the borough are doing the right thing.
In it's latest public newsletter Scarborough Borough Council says the area is being "let down by a few of our fellow residents who believe they are somehow above the law"
North Yorkshire Police have confirmed that out of the 107 COVID rule breach fines they issued in the first week of the new lockdown, 49 of them were issued in the Scarborough Borough.
In their latest newsletter issued today the council say...
"Infection rates in the borough, and across North Yorkshire, rose sharply at the beginning of this month.
The impact of the lockdown is starting to show in the rates, but they are still high.
This is a particular issue in and around the villages of Danby, Castleton, Staithes and Glaisdale, possibly linked to higher infection rates in the neighbouring Hambleton district and Redcar and Cleveland area.
Going to work if you have to, or for essential shopping, in places where infection rates are higher should be avoided if at all possible.
Public health experts believe the coronavirus is being spread because of contact between people who do not live with each other. It doesn’t help that the new variant of Covid-19 is much more transmissible.
Fortunately, the vast majority of people in our borough are doing the right thing, being responsible and following the regulations.
Disappointingly, we are being let down by a few of our fellow residents who believe they are somehow above the law.
North Yorkshire Police had to issue 49 fines in our borough in just the first week of the new national lockdown.
Seven illegal gatherings in Scarborough and one in Whitby were also broken up by police officers last weekend.
